The following is a pre-enactment of what will probably actually happen when Ai hands in her manuscript to Editor-kun:
Editor-kun takes a seat across a table from Ai. "I got your manuscript."
Ai says nothing, filled with enough worry and shame she is beginning to feel the start of another ulcer.
"I have some concerns." Pulling up the Scrivener file on his laptop, Editor-kun starts scrolling down the chapters. "First off, in Book 1, your chapter length was a pretty consistent 4k-6k wordcount. That's a good number, just enough people are interested, not so much they grow bored."
Ai nods, drinking Pepto straight from the bottle.
"Book 2 starts off similarly. You were averaging between 5k-7k words for 13 chapters." Editor-kun pauses to rub his eyes tiredly. "And then Chapter 14 happened."
"I'm sorry!" Ai shouts, prostrating her body onto the table.
Editor-kun continues, ignoring Ai's antics. "10.2k words in Chapter 14."
"I couldn't stop myself, it needed to happen!" Ai wailed.
"There are two long sex scenes in there. Literally 8,000 words of back-to-back smut."
"It's plot smut, I promise! Honoka has her first time with a bug girl, then her second time! Don't cut up my baby!"
Editor-kun rolls his eyes and pushes on, scrolling to the next chapter. "Chapter 15 is worse. 11.1K words. What am I supposed to do with this?"
"That's the allocation chapter! Everything was leading up to it. 7 girls needed proper descriptions, 4 of them are getting a Race change. You can't rush art!"
"You can start a new chapter!" Editor-kun was getting heated up, his hair bursting into spikey anime yellow.
"Noooo! I have a system and an outline! My OCD won't allow me to change!" Ai's own hair became blue and spikey, the energy in the room crackling.
"The first line in Chapter 16 is a pun!" Editor-kun launches a devastating attack.
"Puns are funny!" Ai is immune.
"AAAAAHHH!!"
"GYAAAHH!!"
...
That scene is totally going to happen in a month or two. It's my own fault, but I stand by my decisions. I can make it less wordy, but all the scenes in there have to happen if I'm to get to the big plot thing in Chapter 16. I don't know, should I split them both into two more chapters or do I keep up the chapter count as I formatted in Book 1? I mean, Steven Brust does it and people like his books.
So, if you can math, I got up to 21.3k words this week. That's a record for this book and a record for writing while working full time during the week, but my all-time record for a week was 38k when writing book 1. I had no work and my spouse let me just write, so there were zero distractions. I think 21.3 is a huge achievement, showing how much I care about these two chapters. And 16 is going to be a monster, there's a lot of stuff I have to look up and keep in mind to make sure my book isn't censored, but otherwise I'm also excited to dive in tomorrow evening.
If you're wondering how I can write so much without publishing before, that isn't entirely true. I'm a very political person and for ten years I wrote editorials for various outlets or worked as a professional political commentator for other companies' articles. I'm making a conscious effort to keep my strong opinions outside of my smutty fiction, but as I'm sure anyone who got through Honoka In Wonderland realized, I wasn't entirely successful. My family doesn't share many of my opinions, so tomorrow is going to be hard as usual.
What I'm getting at is I know how to type words into a processor and do it a lot. But for most of my life, whenever I did that with fiction I'd stall until I stopped in the middle and never finished. Now I'm a published erotica author and I can't wait for each day when I have time to furiously masturba...I mean, furiously type my ideas out. And then masturbate! I'm like a dog who gets her treat every time she does a trick.
Anyway, time's up and I'll see you all next week. Find me on GoodReads if you want to chat, I'm on there every day, or just send an email.
Keep harmonizing!
